The Mockup Bottleneck: Why We Built MockItReal for High-Volume POD Sellers

After more than ten years selling print on demand, we kept hitting the same wall. Mockups. Not the easy first ones. The 50th, 200th, 1000th. The ones that quietly steal entire weekends. So we built the tool we wished existed when we started.

The problem we lived with for a decade

Anyone who has sold on Etsy, Shopify, or Amazon Merch knows the loop. You finish a design. You feel good about it. Then comes the part nobody talks about on POD podcasts: making it look real on a t-shirt, mug, canvas, or hoodie before it can ever be listed.

The standard workflow goes something like this. Open Photoshop. Open your PSD template. Drop in the design. Adjust the smart object. Tweak shadows or lighting if your template needs it. Export. Repeat. Forty-nine more times if you are launching a real collection.

For one product? Five minutes. For 200 listings? You just lost most of your week.

We did this loop for years. We hired virtual assistants to do it. We tried Photoshop bulk actions that broke half the time. We tested every mockup tool that promised to fix it. None of them did. They each made a different trade-off, and every trade-off cost us something we needed.

Why the existing mockup tools never worked for us

The mockup tool market splits into roughly three camps, and each has a clear ceiling.

    Camp 1: Template libraries

Placeit, Smartmockups, similar services. Fine for hobbyists. They give you stock templates, you drop in a design, you download. Fast, but generic. Every seller using the same tool ends up with the same look. For brand consistency or scale, they fall apart. You also cannot use your own PSDs, which is a deal breaker the second your brand needs to look different from everyone elses.

    Camp 2: Fulfillment-platform mockups

Printful and Printify give you free mockups, and they are improving. The catch is they are tied to that platforms catalog. If you are listing the same design on Etsy, Shopify, and Amazon, or using multiple suppliers, you cannot maintain a unified mockup style across stores.

    Camp 3: Manual Photoshop

Total control. Total time cost. We measured it once, on a regular launch week. Forty-six mockups. Eight minutes average per mockup, including loading, placing, exporting, organizing into folders. Six hours of pure clicking. That math gets darker the longer you stare at it.

The hidden invoice: what manual mockup work actually costs a serious POD seller every year.
    €10,000
What a serious POD seller pays per year, in their own time, to do mockups manually in Photoshop. We did the math on our own workflow and felt sick.

The moment we decided to build it ourselves

The shift happened during a Q4 planning week in 2024. We were mapping out our product launches for the holiday season and realized something painful. The bottleneck was not designs. We had hundreds of designs. The bottleneck was not the products themselves. Our suppliers had us covered. The bottleneck was, again, mockups.

We sat with that for a few days. Then we asked the obvious question. If we could pour every existing PSD template we owned into a single tool, drop in 200 design files, click one button, and walk away with a ZIP of every finished mockup, what would that be worth to us?

The honest answer was: a lot. Tens of thousands a year, easily. Mostly in time, but also in lost product launches that died in the mockup queue.

Nobody was building it. So we did.

    Our vision for MockItReal

We are not building "another mockup tool." There are enough of those, and most of them are fine for what they are. We are building the tool that high-volume POD sellers need but cannot find right now.

Three things matter to us, in this order:

    1. Bring your own PSDs. Most sellers we know have invested years building branded mockup templates. Photographers, custom photoshoots, painstaking layered files. A serious tool has to respect that work and let you use it directly. Our entire engine is built around this.
    2. Bulk first, single second. Other tools treat bulk like a feature. We treat bulk like the default. Upload 1000 designs. Pick the templates. Walk away. Come back to a ZIP. That is the workflow.
    3. Speed that respects your day. Two seconds per mockup, or thereabouts. Not five. Not ten. Renders that finish before you switch tabs.
"Mockups should not be the bottleneck between your designs and your listings. The day they stop being the bottleneck is the day you start listing at the speed of your creativity."

    What we are actually building

MockItReal is a bulk mockup generator that takes your own PSD templates and your design files and gives you back finished, listing-ready mockups in seconds. Under the hood, the engine renders Photoshop files natively, finds the smart object regions automatically, and applies your designs at full quality.

Three-step MockItReal workflow: upload designs, pick PSD templates, download ZIP of finished mockups
The MockItReal workflow in three steps. No Photoshop required.

For technical sellers, there is a REST API so you can connect MockItReal to your existing Etsy, Shopify, or Amazon workflows. For everyone else, there is a clean dashboard. Drop files in, pick templates, hit generate, download.

We are also keeping it as straightforward to price as we can. There will be a free tier so people can actually try it before paying anything. Paid plans scale based on volume. No hidden charges, no per-template fees, no surprise overage bills.

If you want the technical deep dive on how the rendering engine works, we covered that in our earlier post: Introducing MockItReal: the high-speed mockup engine.

The principles we will not compromise on

We have used a lot of POD tools over the years. Most of them are run by people who have never sold a t-shirt online. You can feel it in the product. Features that look good in a demo and break the second you try to use them at scale. Pricing that punishes growth. Support that ghosts you when something goes wrong.

We are building MockItReal differently. Two things that are not negotiable for us:

Built by sellers, for sellers. Every feature decision passes through one filter: would a high-volume Etsy seller find this useful, or are we just adding it to look impressive? If the answer is the second one, it does not ship.

Pricing that rewards scale, not punishes it. The bigger your operation grows, the more our tool should be saving you, not costing you. We will price accordingly.

    Where this goes from here

MockItReal is in pre-launch right now. Early access is open to a small group of sellers who want to be part of the founding feedback group. If you are running a serious POD shop and the mockup grind is eating your time, we would love to hear from you.

The bigger plan is simple. We want MockItReal to be the boring infrastructure piece every POD seller plugs in once and never thinks about again. The thing that just works, in the background, while you focus on the parts of the business that actually grow it. New designs. Better listings. Smarter marketing. The fun parts.

Mockups should not be the work. They should be the result.

    Common questions about MockItReal

    What is MockItReal?

MockItReal is a bulk mockup generator built for print on demand sellers. It takes your own PSD templates and design files and renders finished mockups in seconds. You upload designs, pick templates, and download a ZIP of listing-ready mockups.

    Who is MockItReal for?

MockItReal is built for high-volume POD sellers, design agencies managing multiple stores, and technical sellers who want API access. If you list on Etsy, Shopify, Amazon, or run multiple POD stores, MockItReal is built for your workflow.

How is MockItReal different from Placeit or Smartmockups?

Placeit and Smartmockups give you stock templates that you cannot fully customize. MockItReal lets you upload your own PSD templates, generate mockups in bulk (up to 1000 per batch), and access a REST API for automation. Built for scale and brand consistency.

    How fast is MockItReal?

Roughly 2 seconds per mockup. A batch of 1000 mockups completes in around 30 minutes, hands-off. Compare to manual Photoshop, which averages 8 minutes per mockup.

    When does MockItReal launch?

MockItReal is in pre-launch. Early access is open to a small group of POD sellers who want founding pricing and direct input on features. Join the waitlist on our homepage to be first in line.
